Hardware decoding of additional codecs on the Pi 3 and earlier models can be enabled by purchasing a licence that is locked to the CPU serial number of your Raspberry Pi.

Home > Products > MPEG-2 Licence Key This key will enable a single Raspberry Pi to decode MPEG-2 video in hardware. You will need to provide your device's internal 16-digit serial number as part of your order. Editing Serial Number. Ask Question 16. On the official raspberrypi.org forum, 'Dom'. And releasing any information to allow you to change the serial number would break the mechanism for codec licencing, so will never happen. Is there a way to attach multiple serial port devices to a single raspberry pi? Raspberry Pi hardware ID.
On the Raspberry Pi 4, the hardware codecs for MPEG2 or VC1 are permanently disabled and cannot be enabled even with a licence key; on the Pi 4, thanks to its increased processing power compared to earlier models, MPEG2 and VC1 can be decoded in software via applications such as VLC. Therefore, a hardware codec licence key is not needed if you're using a Pi 4.
decode_MPG2
- I purchased two raspberry pis and codec for both of them, but I only use codec on one of them now. I found it does not work recently. Need to mention that when rpi store sent me the codecs license, it does not mentioned serial number in it, so I need to try all my codecs to make sure I specify the correct license.
- Essentially, the license enables GPU encoding/decoding of MPEG-2 video, which is better than CPU encoding/decoding. Some more info here. I don't think it's needed for x264 video files which are MPEG-4.
- The license prices of £2.40 and £1.20 for MPEG-2 and VC-1 are presumably way below the expected cost-price headroom, so this balkanization of Pi users into codec haves and have-nots seems entirely unnecessary.
decode_MPG2
is a licence key to allow hardware MPEG-2 decoding, e.g. decode_MPG2=0x12345678

decode_WVC1
decode_WVC1
is a licence key to allow hardware VC-1 decoding, e.g. decode_WVC1=0x12345678
.If you have multiple Raspberry Pis and you've bought a codec licence for each of them, you can list up to eight licence keys in a single
config.txt
, for example decode_MPG2=0x12345678,0xabcdabcd,0x87654321
. This enables you to swap the same SD card between the different Pis without having to edit config.txt
each time. This article uses content from the eLinux wiki page RPiconfig, which is shared under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license

Hi, Any chance you could implement this hack into your Pi release of OpenELEC? The Raspbmc did it so maybe OpenELEC could do the same:) Thanks Raf |

Errrrr correct me if I'm wrong, with the hack I posted in my original post you don't need to pay for a license. |

possible idea: just reboot with different random values until it works... April fools issue or not, the whole thing really is madness. Hardware blocks that decide not to work without a key... |
